There can be various reasons for this.
The most obvious reason would be that you are not on a location displayed on the map. This can be caused by an inaccurate GPS signal. Try standing somewhere you can see the sky.
If that doesn’t help, it might be caused by a wrongly configured map. Remember you need to place the reference points on (slightly) different locations.

The semi-transparent circle indicates the accuracy of your location. A big circle means that you have a really bad GPS signal and that in reality you can be anywhere within that circle.
Try moving somewhere you can see (more) sky. You should see the circle shrink.
No, you can not rotate a map at this time. However, we hope to bring that feature in the near future.
No, mapper does not use the magnetometer (yet).
